Kane/Barnes family in Islandmagee

Post by poppyscarlet »

I am looking into this branch of my family and wonder if anyone else has researched the same people or are related.

Mary Eliza Kane (1885-1984) is my great grandmother ÔÇô she married Charles George Barnes (his father was Henry Charles Barnes who was a coastguard at Portmuck).

Her parents were Thomas Kane (1884-1897) and Eliza McCleary (1851 to 1937)- in the 1901 census they are living in Mullaghboy and in 1911 Eliza is listed there as a widow. They had the following children:
Thomas (1873-1948)ÔÇô married Elizabeth McNeilly/Meneilly
Andrew (1876-1910) ÔÇô married Sarah Jane Kane
William John (1878-1933)
James (1880-?) - married Susan Houston Heggan and emigrated to the US
Robert (1883-1942)ÔÇô emigrated to Canada and married Ethel Mae Wruth
Mary Eliza ÔÇô as above
George (1887-?)
Isabella (1890-1972) ÔÇô married Alexander McCready who died on the sinking of the MV Princess Victoria in 1953
Many are buried in the Ballypriormore Cemetery ÔÇô Mary Eliza was one of the last burials there.

Mary Eliza married Charles Barnes in 1909 ÔÇô this was CharlesÔÇÖ second marriage. They lived in Belfast and had the following children:
George (1910-2001) ÔÇô married Johanna Walker
Thomas Percy (1911-1984) ÔÇô married Johanna Murray
Edith Eileen (1916-2009) ÔÇô married Ernest Graham
Francis Cyril (1918-?) ÔÇô married Violet May Dowds
Marion Isobel (1918-2007) ÔÇô married Bernard Gilmore and emigrated to Australia
Ruby Iris (1919-2000) ÔÇô married Patrick Lawler

They retired back to Islandmagee. They lived at 9 Portmuck Road ÔÇô up the road from my grandparents at 1 Portmuck Road.
