McAuley/McAulay/Macauley/McCauley in Ballygally-Cushendall

Looking info on my g/g/g/g grandfather John (Jack) McAuley born 1782 in Co Antrim who was a tenant farmer beside the walls of Ballygally Castle (confirmed there 1816).

Family hearsay states we McAuley's were originally Catholic from the Cushendall area (confirmed Presbyterian early 1800's).

John married Mary Shearer (Sheragh) born 1785 in Co Antrim in 1806 (place unknown). They had 8 children:

1. Mary married Thomas Colton
2. Charlotte married James Bleakley from Ballymena
3. Neil b. 1809 married Sarah Moore b. 1811 from Cairncastle (my line)
4. John died single
5. James died single
6.Catherine (Kate) b. 1824 single Postmistress Cairncastle
7. Rachel b. 1825 married Paul Carmichael and
8. William b. 1830 married 1st Jane Hunter and 2nd Matilda Hall. No children. Inherited the Ballygally farm.

Has anyone any knowledge of John and Mary or their children? I would love to find out when the family came to Ballygally and if there is a connection with the Glens.

McAuley's of Cushendall, Red Bay, Waterfoot

Post by ursula glover » 02 Jul 2007, 19:49

I am researching McAuleys from Cushendall, Red Bay and Waterfoot.

Alexander McAuley was born c1798. His son Patrick was born in 1850 in Waterfoot.

Patrick married Ann Harvey, born c1852. Her father was Arthur.

Alexander was a butcher and Patrick was a mariner.

Patrick moved to Liverpool and Alexander followed later in his life.

Any connections out there ?

Regards - Ursula Glover (nee McAuley)
