The intention is to list all persons mentioned as native Irish speakers in East Ulster and adjoining areas, and all references to such persons, in books, periodicals, newspapers, etc. These are supplemented by personal details, from the censuses of 1901 and 1911, the civil register of births, marriages and deaths, old age pension claims, electoral registers, valuation records, etc.; though it is to be expected that many such details presently included will ultimately turn out not to refer to the speaker in question, but to others similarly named.

This collection of references is only raw material. It still remains, in the case of most speakers, to digest the items and produce a coherent summary which will resolve contradictions and omit irrelevancies, and this task is best deferred until the collected information on the speaker is as complete as possible. Despite this, it seems worthwhile to make the material available in its present form, and to update it as appropriate.
