Whiteford of Antrim and then Campbeltown Sco

Seeking information about the family and parents of James Whiteford. James is listed as a 15 year old on the 1841 Census in Campbeltown Argyll, Sco. His mother was Margaret (50) and there was a sister Cathrine (20). Place of birth for all was Ireland. James and his wife are also in Campbeltown 1851 Census but migrated to Australia in 1852.

Listers to the Argyll boards have advised me that there were about 4 Whiteford families in Campbeltown all from Antrim and mostly involved in fishing. This is referenced in book, "Kintyre, the hidden past". 50 years later in an Australian newspaper clipping, James's father is referred to as Captain Whiteford which may confirm the fishing link.

Margaret's maiden name may have been Reid as James's first daughter was called Mary Reid Whiteford. That is not his wife's maiden name (Wylie) which was given to their son James.

Very keen to find out about this family. Any information about the Whitefords of Antrim, especially anybody involved in fishing who may have travelled or returned to Scotland would be most appreciated.

Thanks all for any help/advice on where to search for this family.

Cheers

Anne Whiteford
