Bridget Burns County Down to New Brunswick, Canada

Post by Inez Reed » 06 Apr 2009, 20:57

Seeking information on the possible origins of Hugh (b. 1773) and his wife Bridget (1771-1856) who came to Charlotte County, New Brunswick in 1818 (1851 NB Census). Their family included Barnard (listed variously as Bernard, Barnsby) b. 1803; and Catherine b. 1801 who were born in Ireland. She married Walter McFarlane in 1821. Hugh and Barnard are listed on a land petition in 1824 in St. Patrick Parish, Charlotte, NB.

Hugh died between 1846 (tax list) and 1856. A newspaper in 1856 reporting the death of Bridget at the home of her son Barnsby listed her as a native of County Down.

These are the only concrete clues I have for this couple. Their children appear to have been communicants in the Roman Catholic Church.

If anyone would have any insight on possible clues to ships' lists for this period (NB archives search big goose egg), please drop me a line.
