Hugh Burns County Down to NB, Canada

Post by Inez Reed » 09 Apr 2009, 23:47

Would anyone have any insight as to what resources, documentary sources might be available for County Down, late 18th or early 19th centuries? I am trying to trace the origins of a Hugh (b. abt. 1773) and his wife Bridget (b. abt 1777) who emigrated to Charlotte County, New Brunswick in 1818. Hugh and Bridget likely married by about 1800. They had two children that I know of Catherine b. 1801 and Barnard b. in 1803. There may have been other children.

Earliest tax and census data indicates that Hugh was a farmer. I have not been able to locate online sources for the 1803 agricultural indices for Down or Antrim (many in this area of NB were from the North) to see how many Hugh Burns were listed. An 1856 obituary for Bridget cited her place of birth simply as "County Down".

I have, so far, been unsuccessful at locating any ship's lists for that time period in New Brunswick.

Cheers,
Inez Reed
