Issues concerning tenant farmers and landlords

Post by Christopher » 28 Dec 2008, 09:48

Maggie Blanck's website contains a large amount of interesting information about Ireland's landlords and the tenant farmers who lived in smallholdings on their estates. It covers the evictions and other problems faced by the small holders. Although the bulk of the items relate to Co. Mayo there are references to Sir Thomas Bateson who owned several estates which included Belvoir Park near Belfast, Moira Park, County Down and one in Co. Londonderry . http://maggieblanck.com/Mayopages/LandIssues.html

The QUB page for the Centre of Eighteenth Century Studies has a picture of a painting of the family of Thomas Bateson Esq., Co. Down (1762) which is attributed to Strickland Lowry. National Museums Northern Ireland 2007.
