Eakins, or Eakin family
Hi,
Am trying to gather details of my nan, who was born in Ballycastle, around 1905. Her name was Eileen Eakins, and her father was a Joseph Eakins, who was killed in action in WW1.
I understand the surname may have dropped the "s" from the end...any info would be greatfully received.[/b]

Re: Eakins, or Eakin family
Hello Kenners,
What denomination were your Eakin or Eakins ancestors and do you know the maiden name of your Nan's mother? There's no listing for in Ballycastle, Griffiths Valuation - Antrim 1861-62 for either name. They were either living with another family or arrived in Ballycastle after the Valuation took place.

Re: Eakins, or Eakin family
Hi all
Many thanks for all your replies - since my first posting I discovered that my nan Eileen Eakins was born in Antrim (Belfast) and that her actual christian name was Ellen as per the 1911 census. My mum never knew that!
Nan's dad, Joseph was indeed KIA in WW1 at the Somme, and thanks to Irishgen for the info kindly supplied. It's interesting too that they were all 'COI' as my mum (Ellen's daughter) was raised as a Catholic and a strict one at that, as were all the daughters. Could it be that either Joseph or Mary (Devlin) his wife, were Catholic and one converted to the other's religion to marry?
I do know that Joseph originally hailed from Kinsgtown, Dublin and moved to Antrim late 1890s where he married Mary Devlin in 1899.
Thanks again for all your help

Re: Eakins, or Eakin family
Hope you find the above of interest. I was just testing the possibilities of the new software at FamilySearch and your family tree was most helpful. I found 2 possible Josephs and 2 possible Marys. I think I have the correct children. The marriage date seem also correct.
As to your query about religion I would assume that Mary reverted back to her religion. This would be important if she returned to her family in Belfast after her husbands death and they were RC. The pressure would have been enormous. Just my opinion of course, further research by you should unravel the mystery.
greetings

Re: Eakins, or Eakin family
Hello Kenners
I have just found your query regarding your nan. Your nan's mother Mary Eakins nee Devlin was a sister of my grandfather, Peter. She moved back to live in Ballycastle where her widowed mother was living. Her son Jospeh Eakins(Ellen's brother) also lived in Ballycastle. Mary Eakins died in Ballycastle on 23 February 1959. Joseph died on 20 February 1981.
I think Mary also had another daughter living in Ballycastle and I can get more details if you wish.
I would be very interested to hear from you especially if you have any further details on the Devlin side as I am also researching the family.

Re: Eakins, or Eakin family
hello ellen
I am the grandaughter of Mary Devlin and I am so pleased that Kenners has found our Irish ancestors and family members. I am one of 5 daughters who are the daughters of Eileen Eakins (or should I really say Ellen Eakins) sadly there are only 3 of us left now I have visited Ballycastle when I was a small child and met my Grandmother, William and Joe and also Maisie and her children - our cousins Jean Marie and John. Looking forward to hear from you with any information that you have.
